German software giant, SAP has launched its Sovereign Cloud in India, a new offering to help government and regulated industries leverage cloud and AI while retaining control of sensitive data and operations.
The move comes at a time when digital sovereignty is becoming a priority across the globe, with several countries seeking greater control over data in the face of emerging regulations, AI-driven innovation, and geopolitical shifts. SAP Sovereign Cloud is in compliance with India’s the National Information Security Policy & Guidelines (NISPG) to protect data under the control of Government bodies and public sector organizations.
The Indian Government is making efforts to position India as a global hub for data centres and AI infrastructure. The IT Ministry is also preparing data protection rules to operationalize the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
SAP Sovereign Cloud is designed as a full-stack framework, spanning infrastructure, platform, applications, and AI. It offers sovereign controls with open-source flexibility and offers deployment choices including on-site data centers and a hyperscaler-based model with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This will allow Indian enterprises to balance sovereignty requirements with operational needs.
The solution is supported by a Secure Operational Facility at SAP Labs India Innovation Park in Bengaluru, purpose-built to meet stringent requirements of India’s national security authorities. The facility will serve as a hub for compliance, co-creation, and innovation with Indian customers.
“Digital sovereignty supports public sector and regulated industry customers in creating a foundation that is secure, resilient, and future-ready for growth,” said Martin Merz, President, SAP Sovereign Cloud, in a press release.
Manish Prasad, President and Managing Director of SAP Indian Subcontinent, added: “By ensuring data remains secure, compliant, and within sovereign boundaries, we are enabling India’s regulated industries to innovate fearlessly. This supports the country’s vision of a self-reliant, technologically empowered future.”
